Your Home Improvement Winter To-Do List

Your Home Improvement Winter To-Do List

When the winter drives you inside, it’s tempting to curl up on the couch and stay put for months. How can you regain some productivity through these frigid months?

Today, we’ll go through a few to-do list items that can set up your home for the seasons to come. You may not think home improvement can happen in the winter, but there are different projects you can do to improve all of the parts of your home.

1. Declutter Your Home

This is the perfect opportunity to tackle the clutter lurking in each room. Take on one room at a time, and ask yourself realistically what you’re not using anymore.

Winter is the perfect time to tackle cleaning out your coat closet. You know what coats, hats, scarves, etc. you’re using, so you can donate the ones you’re not.

If you find it hard to get rid of things, think of the good they’ll do for someone else. Donating books helps someone else discover a story you love. Donating clothes that don’t fit gives new life to an outfit you used to love.

2. Clean Out Your Kitchen

Remodeling a kitchen seems glamourous and exciting, while cleaning it out seems like an awful chore. However, cleaning out and reorganizing your kitchen brings it new life.

Toss expired food and put some use to the online “organization hacks” you read. Your kitchen will feel fresh and a lot easier to use.

By getting rid of the gadgets and dishes you don’t use anymore, you may find you had a much better kitchen than you thought.

3. Plan Home Improvement Projects for the Year Ahead

You might not be ready to take on home improvement projects in January or February, but now is a great time of year to plan for them. As you’re setting a budget for the year to come, plan to save so the home improvement you need isn’t a major expense.

Start reading reviews on companies and getting estimates for the project you have in mind to figure out how it would work for you. At AWS, our quotes hold for one year. Take advantage of our great winter sales, but take on the project when you’re ready.

4. Check the Landscape

Between snow storms, do a walk around of your home exterior and landscape. Is there damage to your roofing or siding? Is your shrubbery in a sorry state? What about the lawn?

Make note of any issues and fit a fix into the schedule for spring or summer.

During the winter, many people suffer from seasonal affective disorder (also known as seasonal depression). It’s dark and cold, you’re stuck inside—not a great environment for mental health.

It also may be too cold outside for children to play, so they’re stuck inside with you.

Give yourself and your kids a break from the gloom of winter by refreshing interior rooms. Add something fun, like a small play tent or chalk board, to the kids’ rooms. Create a cozy reading corner for yourself.

Refreshing the inside of your home will leave you energized to take on the outside of your home in spring.
