How To Clean Asphalt Roof Shingles

• 4.5 liters of hot water
• 1 cup of chlorine bleach
• 1 cup of laundry detergent or dish soap
• .25 cup of trisodium phosphate (available at any local hardware store)

Cleaning Method: If available, use a pump garden sprayer to coast the asphalt tiles with the solution. Let it sit until stains from the solution begin to fade, which should be around 10-15 minutes. For sections that are badly affected by mildew or mold, scrub the asphalt tiles lightly with a sponge mop.

Rinse: For an immediate clean, use your garden hose with a sprayer head or a pressure-washer to rinse down the roof. Be sure to also rinse the gutters to prevent any corrosion by the cleaning solution. If willing to wait for results, simply let the rain naturally wash away the solution over the next several months.

Garden Safety: Make sure to wet down all of your surrounding bushes, plants and shrubbery with a hose before coating your roof in the solution. The water helps to protect foliage from contact with the bleach. For extra protection, soak your plants again while waiting for the solution to dry.

Personal Safety: Put on protective clothing such as goggles, gloves and non-slip shoes when cleaning your roof. Also make sure your ladder is strong and secure and that someone is aware you are working on your roof and is available if you need any assistance.
